Like anything else, roofs too can require roof repair work. It is very common to see some roof leaks, flashing failure, or shingle deterioration during the life of your roof, and repairing them is not always complicated. Beware, however, that any roof repair work not carried out meticulously and appropriately could lead to even worse damage, so do not hesitate to call one of our contractors if you are not a roofing expert.
How to roof repair asphalt shingles
- Save a torn shingle by applying a layer of roofing cement on the back of each torn section with a putty knife. Press the pieces into position so the cement bonds between the pieces and also sticks them to the shingle beneath them. Hammer roofing nails along the repair to hold it in place.
- Fix a curling shingle similarly. Glue it down with roofing cement and tack the edges down with roofing nails.
- Remove completely damaged shingles and replace them.
How to roof repair gutter leaks
- Locate roof leak for roof repair.
- Control any immediate damage to inside and outside.
- Dry the area and rub with coarse sandpaper.
- Cover the hole with plastic roofing cement. Spread the cement at least 2 to 3 inches around the hole.
- Cover with a piece of flashing (sheet metal) if you're dealing with a large hole; press the flashing into the cement and feather the edges of the cement to hold the flashing in place.
How to roof repair flashing failure
- Locate leak.
- For leaks between the pipe and collar or through the collar, replace the collar or slip a repair collar over the pipe on top of the existing one.
- For flashing leaks, install new vent flashing. Remove the shingles above the flashing, and install it according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually with finishing nails.
