How to Install a Roof

  1. Begin with a level nailing surface – shim trusses or rafters to level the nailing surface, and install blocking to straighten any warped or bowed top chords of trusses or rafters. Check the flatness of the roof using a 6-10 foot piece of lumber of long carpenter’s level. The supports should not be more than ¼ of an inch lower or higher than one another.
  2. Install ventilation applications – vent exhaust air from the bathroom, kitchen and laundry through to the roof, by placing half your vents near peaks or along ridges, and the other half at eaves or soffits. If 50-80% of ventilator area is placed at peaks or ridges, then the total free ventilating area can be 1/300 of attic space. If they are placed. If less, they should occupy 1/150 of attic space. Install baffles at the eaves, and leave 1 inch of free space between framing and/or under roof sheathing.
  3. Nail and space panels – position 1st panel and use temporary fasteners for corners. Install fasteners on one end and remove at corners. Install intermediate fasteners, starting at panel edge. Leave 1/8 inch space between adjacent panels and edge joints, using an 8 or 10d common or panel edge clips. Saw or cut kerf out of tight joints once sheathing is completed.
  4. Install felt – clean surface thoroughly and smooth out felt before fastening shingles.
  5. Install shingles according to manufacturer’s guidelines
