DIY Roofing Insulation

Roof Insulation Applications

Thermal roof insulation is usually installed in building envelope components to reduce space cooling and heating, costs, and energy use. The advantages of installing insulation here is the increase in living space, the elimination of condensation on roof surfaces during cold temperatures, and also reduced requirements for heating and cooling capacities.

Conditions in Which to Insulate Roof Applications

The roof insulation must be installed dry and be kept in this state until it has reached or exceeded its lifetime. When installing board and batt type roof insulation, gaps should not be left as they minimize roof insulation effectiveness. Other factors influencing roof insulation effectiveness include temperature cycling, vibrations, and other similar mechanical forces. The functionality of your roof membrane is also crucial. If you cannot install roof insulation correctly, you will seriously impair its efficiency. If you are unsure of how to insulate roof applications, contact Roof 101 to work with a professional.

Roof Insulation Installation Steps – Spray Foam Roof Insulation

  1. Heat the tank to about 30 degrees using a domestic heater. Both tanks should be at a viscosity of a 1:1 ratio.
  2. Shake the tanks to mix chemicals for maximum output of spray foam.
  3. Hold the gun about 12 inches from the surface being sprayed, and spray a thin layer of foam. A layer about 1/8” thick will expand to approximately an inch, so always wait before building up the layers. The roof should be sprayed according to design thickness.
  4. All flashings and penetrations should be sprayed to form a monolithic surface. All depressions should be built up to facilitate proper drainage.
